Christmas Cactus - An American Favourite
An unusual Brazilian native, this winter-blooming plant is usually given potted as a long-lasting gift. Christmas Cactus also looks particularly nice in hanging basket arrangements. They come mainly in festive red, orange, purple and cream.
Originally thought to bloom on Christmas Eve, long-term owners find they usually come out naturally at Thanksgiving.
Christmas Rose - Not Actually A Rose!
Despite the name, this little-known plant isn't actually a rose. Otherwise known as Hellebore, these flowers come in mainly white, cream and variants of purple. Called the Christmas rose due to an old legend that it sprouted in the snow from the tears of a young girl who had no gift to give the Christ child in Bethlehem.
Holly - Decorational Sprigs
Usually sold in sprigs of the female plant with it's red berries set against the deep greens of the leaves. Holly sprigs have long been associated with Christmas, and can even be dated back to use by the Druids. Taking the Druids' beliefs of Holly symbolising everlasting life, Christians adopted the plant is a symbol of Jesus' promise of everlasting life.
Mistletoe - Christmas Kisses
Well-known as a way to get a kiss from the one you love on Christmas, Mistletoe was originally a symbol of fertility. Commonly used as a piece of d©cor in modern homes rather than the keeping of the whole plant. For many years, Mistletoe was banned by the Christian church due to it's history within the Druid community.
As well as using these festive favourites, you can spruce up any bouquet to look more Christmas-y by adding some simple touches. Try adding stems of bright red Holly berries, red dogwood stems or green eucalyptus berries to a bouquet. Ivy can add a splash of green color to formal centerpieces, while white snow-berries are ideal for Christmas wedding boutonnieres. Source
